EPA Victoria is investigating a foam pollution incident in Stony Creek, West
Footscray in Melbourne’s West to track pollution to its source and identify
those responsible.
EPA will target discharges to the creek from stormwater drains connected to
nearby industry.
EPA acting metro manager Chris Bydder said that EPA acknowledged that this may
be a case of accidental pollution, someone unaware of their environmental
obligations.
“Anyone discharging chemicals to the environment is committing an offence and
faces significant fines - pouring chemicals such as detergent down a stormwater
drain can kill plants and fish," Mr Bydder said.
“Industry must ensure their stormwater and waste management controls meet the
expected standards. Properly secured areas are the only acceptable place for
stored chemicals and waste - unsecured areas put the environment and the
community at risk.
“Companies have a responsibility to operate using best practice and with due
consideration for the environment.”
Report foam or other forms of pollution entering Stony Creek to EPA’s Pollution
Hotline on 1300 EPA VIC (1300 372 842).
