Businesses in the north west are reminded by EPA Victoria of their
environmental responsibilities when it comes to the correct disposal of
industrial waste.
In the past few months, EPA identified dumping of industrial waste in the
region as a problem, and has issued remedial notices to help businesses and
farmers address issues so they are compliant.
EPA north west manager Scott Pigdon said it was important businesses understood
the importance of disposing industrial waste and rubbish correctly, and had
information about what to do to avoid damaging the environment as a result poor
disposal methods.
“While the bulk of inspected operators are doing the right thing, there are a
handful that do not," Mr Pigdon said.
“We want local industry and farmers to know EPA is committed to working with
them to ensure they have the appropriate information to correctly dispose of
industrial waste to minimise environmental damage.
“Incorrect disposal of waste not only looks bad, but can damage the environment
with the possibility of run off from dump sites contaminating land and water
sources such as lakes, creeks and drinking water supplies."
Local councils pay on average $75,000 a year to address the issue of illegal
dumping.
Businesses requiring further information or guidance on appropriate rubbish
disposal should contact EPA’s north west office on 1300 EPA VIC (1300 372 842).
