Residents of Deer Park and Ravenhall report that they're being badly affected by offensive odour, with most callers nominating Boral and Pinegro Composting as sources.
There are a number of different industries in Deer Park and Ravenhall that could be contributing so we're investigating to pinpoint the source.
Since September 2013, we've checked up on these operators 25 times. That includes four compliance visits to Boral Landfill, three to Pinegro Composting, two odour investigations and nine odour surveillance operations.
Victoria’s pollution regulator, EPA, sets standards for industry in order to protect the community. When there is a clear breach of these standards and an identifiable source, EPA can take action. But odour investigations can be tricky, they're complex and can take some time to get a resolution, particularly when there are a number of possible sources and large distances between the industry and residential area.
If you live in this community and are experiencing offensive odour, please immediately report this 1300 EPA VIC. Timely and accurate reports help us pinpoint odour source and take action.
The community is always our main driver, so when we started to get increased odour reports from the area, we increased visits and inspections. This led to EPA requirements of both the landfill and composter to fix the cause of some identified odours.
We won't stop working in this area until we find the source and make sure it's fixed, with more strategic surveillance and compliance inspections already planned.
