It stinks in Wangaratta

16 Jan 2014

EPA Victoria has been made aware of an odour in Wangaratta that has been
lingering since 13 January.

North East Regional Manager Clare Kiely said that the EPA Customer Service team
has received approximately 25 reports concerning odours and a number of people
have contacted the Wangaratta EPA office directly.

“Although descriptions vary, all reporters describe it as foul and pervading,
generally growing in strength during the night and dissipating during the day,”
Ms Kiely said.

“Our Environment Protection Officers are taking the matter seriously and are
working to identify the source(s) of the odours.

“We have undertaken a number of odour surveillance exercises within the
Wangaratta urban area and have been in contact with a number of businesses in
the area that could potentially be the source of the odours.

“We appreciate it can be quite frustrating for residents and the heat can
contribute to making the smell worse.”

The Rural City of Wangaratta Council has also received several similar
complaints.
