Beach Report forecasts that Bay beaches are currently good for swimming, but may be impacted by predicted overnight thunderstorms in the Yarra catchment and Port Phillip Bay.
The Victorian Government's Cleaner Yarra Bay website www.cleaneryarrabay.vic.gov.au provides timely and accurate water quality alerts and information about the Yarra and Bay so Victorian’s can make informed decisions about where to swim and how to protect these unique natural assets.
EPA Victoria monitors the quality of water in Port Phillip Bay and Yarra River to ensure that you are not exposed to unnecessary health risks.
Forecasts for 36 bay beaches are issued twice a day at 10am and 3pm. Forecasts for four Yarra sites are issued twice a day at 10am and 3pm.
- Good predicts that water quality is suitable for swimming;
- Fair means that water quality is good but could be affected by rainfall particularly if the beach is close to a stormwater outlet; and
- Poor is a warning which means you should avoid contact with the water.
A forecast is predictive. If something doesn’t look right, use your judgment and avoid swimming. EPA advises not to swim near stormwater or river outlets 24-48 hours after rain or if there are signs of pollution such as discoloured water, debris or oil and scum.
