On Saturday 28th of June, 2014, two Senior EPA officers attended and presented at a community meeting held to discuss issues around the Bulla Tip run by BTQ Group Pty Ltd.
The meeting was convened by the ‘Stop Bulla Toxic Tip’ community action group where participants were able to listen to EPA and CFA officers who explained their role in dealing with various aspects of the property.
The group is protesting the impact the operation of the B.T.Q Group Pty Ltd solid inert and asbestos landfill (500 Sunbury Road, Bulla) is having on residents in the Bulla and surrounding areas.
Key concerns of the residents related to ongoing fires at the premises, odour impacts, dust generation, various concerns about asbestos, groundwater impacts and general visual amenity.
The Senior EPA officers were well received at the meeting and gained a clearer picture of the residents’ concerns.
In turn, the residents now have a better understanding of EPA’s role in responding to complaints and as a result, the relationship between the residents and EPA is on very solid ground with a high degree of trust on both sides.
This premises is being managed by EPA Metro region as a Local Strategic Initiative. It is expected that there will be ongoing community and media interest in this site.
