Naturally occurring fish deaths at Lake Tyers

13 Jun 2014

EPA Victoria has investigated fish deaths at Lake Tyers in East Gippsland.

Various species of dead fish have been observed in Lake Tyers over the past days, predominately around the Long Point area.

The cause of the fish death is being attributed to natural causes, due to low dissolved oxygen levels in the lake.

EPA believes the incident is unrelated to fish deaths that have also been investigated along the Gippsland Coast from Seaspray to Marlo.

EPA is aware of a forecast heavy rainfall event in East Gippsland on the weekend. This flushing flow may remove or disturb deoxygenated waters, which may result in further natural fish death events.

Suspected fish deaths should be reported to the EPA Pollution Hotline on 1300 372 842. It is important that reporters record any observations of pollution that may be a cause.
