EPA officers are investigating the rail reserve behind the former Wunderlich factory at 47 McIntyre Road, Sunshine North today following reports the area contains asbestos.
EPA Chief Executive Officer, Nial Finegan today reminded the local community the former factory is fully sealed.
“The rubble at the back of the site near the rail line is of concern. We will take samples and report back to the community on what this is and with any further information as it comes to hand,” he said.
“The area is a live rail line and the public should not be accessing the site at all.”
Mr Finegan said EPA had been involved with the management of the site since its closure.
“It closed in 1983 and it was capped in 1985. It’s now listed on EPA’s Priority Sites Register and underwent an environmental audit in 1998 when it changed its land use. It has been managed under a strict regime since then.”
The current operators are managing the site and are required to comply with the conditions imposed by EPA. These conditions are on the notice listed in the Priority Sites Register, which is available on EPA’s website.
