Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) has requested the Rural City of Wangaratta erect asbestos warning signs at Merriwa Park following reports a section may be contaminated.
EPA today inspected an embankment on the boundary of Merriwa Park and found construction and demolition waste that may potentially be contaminated with asbestos.
The extent of the potential contamination is not clear however EPA has collected samples for analysis.
As a precautionary measure, EPA has requested council place asbestos warning signs around the section and undertake dust management controls to prevent dust generation.
EPA understands council has closed the area off to the public.
If asbestos is found, EPA will issue remedial notices to the land manager directing they remove the materials and to further investigate the extent of the contamination.
