Asbestos confirmed at Strathmerton site

17 Apr 2015

Samples taken from a Strathmerton site last week containing construction and demolition waste have tested positive for asbestos.

Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) visited the 3.4 hectare property last Friday following an allegation that demolition and construction waste was being buried at the premises.

During the inspection, EPA officers found material at the site that was suspected to contain asbestos. Samples were sent off for analysis and results confirm the presence of asbestos.

EPA issued the landowner with a Pollution Abatement Notice requiring access to the site be restricted and that they undertake immediate suppression measures to prevent dust generation.

The duty holder is currently complying with this notice. Dust suppression measures will remain in place until the asbestos contamination material has been removed.

EPA will now issue a Clean-Up Notice requiring the removal of all industrial waste including any asbestos contaminated material.

EPA encourages the community to report pollution on 1300 372 842 (1300 EPA VIC) or by visiting www.epa.vic.gov.au
