Samples taken from Merriwa Park in Wangaratta following reports a section may be contaminated have tested positive for asbestos.
Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) inspected an embankment on the boundary of the park and found construction and demolition waste suspected to contain asbestos.
Samples were sent off for analysis and results confirm the presence of asbestos.
EPA will issue remedial notices to the land manager directing they remove the materials and to further investigate the extent of the contamination.
The site remains closed off to the public. The Rural City of Wangaratta has placed asbestos warning signs around the section and will continue to undertake dust management controls to prevent dust generation.
