EPA issues clean-up notice on Strathmerton site

28 Apr 2015

Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) has issued a clean-up notice to the owner of a Strathmerton site after industrial waste at the property tested positive for asbestos contamination.

EPA North East Manager Clare Kiely said the removal of asbestos contamination would be completed by a licenced asbestos removalist within 2-3 weeks.

EPA has already issued the landowner with a pollution abatement notice requiring restricted access to the site and measures to ensure no dust is generated from the property.

“The occupier of the land is currently complying with this notice and dust suppression measures will be required to remain in place until all asbestos contamination has been removed from the site,” Ms Kiely said.

Ms Kiely said the new notice also required the duty holder to obtain a clearance certificate from an occupational hygienist, remove all construction and demolition waste from the site and to provide EPA with evidence that all waste has been disposed of appropriately.

EPA will continue its investigation into any potential offences relating to the illegal dumping of industrial waste at the 3.4 hectare Strathmerton property.

Members of the community are encouraged to report pollution on 1300 372 842 (1300 EPA VIC) or by visiting www.epa.vic.gov.au
