Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) has issued two Brooklyn businesses with Penalty Infringement Notices in excess of $7000 after they failed to implement measures to minimise dust issues coming from their premises.
EPA issued the $7381 fines to J&M Ridolfi Transport Services Pty Ltd and Butler Freight Services Pty Ltd for not complying with Pollution Abatement Notices that required they have management plans and/or engineering solutions in place to minimise dust.
Another four companies were also given official warnings relating to mud and dust leaving their premises.
Dust from premises like these has contributed to poor air quality for the residents of Brooklyn.
EPA Manager Metro, Richard Marks said the recent enforcement action comes as officers get set to follow up on more Pollution Abatement Notices issued to businesses in the area.
“There are currently 27 Pollution Abatement Notices in place on businesses and 65 per cent of those reached their final compliance date at the end of December 2014,” he said.
“EPA officers will follow-up on whether these notices have been addressed as part of a compliance operation taking place this month.”
Mr Marks said the fines should serve as a timely reminder to businesses operating in the precinct.
“They must ensure dust and mud is kept within the boundaries of properties and not emitted into local communities.”
“EPA is committed to improving the environment in Brooklyn and will remain actively involved in reducing dust issues around the precinct through significant regulatory efforts.”
Mr Marks encouraged the community to report pollution to EPA on 1300 372 842 or by visiting www.epa.vic.gov.au
