Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) is seeking views from the community, industry and government on two draft general classifications, released today.
Under the Environment Protection (Industrial Waste Resource) Regulations 2009, drilling mud, tallow and used cooking oil are category A prescribed industrial waste (PIW) as they are liquid.
The draft classifications propose to classify them as a non-PIW when they present low risk to human health and the environment.
- The draft tallow and used cooking oil classification proposes to classify tallow and used cooking oil as non-PIW for the purpose of re-use, recycling and biodiesel production, provided appropriate measures are in place to prevent pollution to the environment.
- The draft drilling mud classification recognises uncontaminated drilling mud as non-PIW, provided the requirements and management options outlined in the document are followed.
EPA welcomes comments on the classification proposals outlined. Submissions on the draft classifications can be made to guidelines@epa.vic.gov.au by 5pm on 27 February 2015.
