EPA monitoring of groundwater in Sunshine

3 Jun 2015

Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) will today conduct precautionary monitoring at the former Sunshine Harvester site as part of its ongoing investigations into groundwater pollution in the region.

EPA Regional Services Executive Director Damian Wells said EPA began investigating all potential sources of groundwater pollution in the Sunshine area last year.

‘EPA began the investigation in response to community concerns about possible contamination issues left behind from local heavy industry,’ Mr Wells said.

‘EPA authorised officers can be expected to be seen in the area this afternoon with monitoring equipment that will enable testing related to groundwater contamination.

‘People should feel free to approach us if they have any questions.

‘EPA will keep the community informed of the outcomes of our monitoring. We will continue to work with the local community to ensure any potential historical pollution issues are appropriately managed.’

Mr Wells said EPA was also gathering further information about historic groundwater contamination related to the Sunshine Harvester site.

Residents wanting more information or who have any concerns are invited to call EPA on 1300 372 842 (1300 EPA VIC).
