About 200 fish deaths at Three Mile Creek in Wangaratta appear to have been caused by suspected chemical contamination.
While the waterway does not present a significant level of hazard to the community, EPA urges members of the community, and any livestock they might have, to avoid contact with the waterway until further notice. Residents should be advised that drinking water supplies will not be affected.
Further investigation will take place to try and determine what the chemical was, where it came from and how much was disposed of in the waterway.
EPA will continue to work with relevant agencies to explore the feasibility and practicality of addressing the issue as soon as possible. Signage has been erected advising the community to avoid contact with the waterway and to ensure livestock are kept well away.
Suspected fish deaths should be reported to EPA on 1300 372 842.
