EPA completes installation of monitoring bores in South Geelong

26 Nov 2015

Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) has installed 17 new monitoring bores at the former South Geelong landfill site that will collect data about gas concentrations from legacy waste under the ground.

The new bores will be used to monitor methane, carbon dioxide and trace gases as well as oxygen, nitrogen, gas pressure and gas flow and complement existing monitoring at the site after methane was detected there earlier this year.

EPA South West Manager Eve Graham said the methane levels posed no risk to businesses at the site.

“If there are any methane readings of concern recorded, businesses will be notified immediately,’’ Ms Graham said.

Most of the new bores have been installed in the area bounded by Gravel Pits Road, Hede Street, Wood St and Barwon Terrace, while three are located on public land next to residential houses on the corner of Swanston St and Fyans Rd.
