Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) is encouraging members of the community to take an active role in environmental protection by attending its Citizen Science training day this Saturday, 24 October 2015.
EPA’s Programs, Quality and Operations Manager, Michael Ernest said the program would offer residents the opportunity to know more about the health of the local environment by learning water quality techniques.
“The program relies on local volunteers to collect water data and share their findings with EPA, allowing citizen scientists to actively monitor their own environment,” he said.
Starting at 10am and ending with a free BBQ lunch at 1pm, participants at this Saturday’s event will:
-
Get to know EPA and its Citizen Science Program, including meeting the team and learning about the program’s history;
-
Gain an understanding of different water quality measures and underwater species and;
-
Take part in a field training session at Bert Thompson Reserve Picnic Area and be trained in the use of scientific equipment.
Community members interested in attending can RSVP by contacting EPA at: citizen.science@epa.vic.gov.au, on 1300 372 842 (1300 EPA VIC) or 8458 2348. Spaces are limited.
