Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) is investigating a spill into a lagoon situated adjacent to the Goulburn River near Shepparton’s John Riordan Oval.
EPA officers are working to see if the odourous spill has impacted the Goulburn River and are today taking water samples in the river.
Water samples from the lagoon have already been collected and the results of these are due next week and will be communicated to the community.
The EPA investigation also aims to find the source of the spill by examining nearby stormwater drains.
As the lagoon is in an area where there are many walking tracks, EPA advises that contact be avoided until EPA’s investigation is complete.
EPA’s investigation will also determine whether breaches of the Environment Protection Act 1970 have occurred.
EPA urges members of the public to continue reporting suspected pollution to the EPA on 1300 EPA VIC (1300 372 842) or through its website, www.epa.vic.gov.au
