Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) will conduct an inspection of Veolia’s Brooklyn site on Wednesday, 28 October following a report of a chemical reaction at the site.
EPA Metropolitan Manager Daniel Hunt said the waste management company had notified EPA of the incident last week.
“Veolia contacted EPA to report that a chemical reaction had occurred from liquid waste it had received at the site,” Mr Hunt said.
“Veolia also informed EPA that the reaction had been contained on site, and that while the site was evacuated, nobody was injured.”
Mr Hunt said EPA’s investigation would focus on ensuring the company was operating in compliance with its EPA licence.
“EPA’s investigation will also determine whether breaches of the Environment Protection Act 1970 have occurred,” Mr Hunt said.
EPA urges members of the public to continue reporting suspected pollution to the EPA on 1300 EPA VIC (1300 372 842) or through its website, www.epa.vic.gov.au
