Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) is investigating an oil spill from the Engie Loy Yang B Power Station site into AGL’s Loy Yang A site after being notified of the incident on Sunday, 17 April 2016.
EPA Gippsland Manager Emily Sanders said the company informed EPA that turbine oil from an onsite pipe had lost about 1600 litres to a settling pond at the neighbouring Loy Yang A site, but an initial examination of the incident appears to show that none had left the site into Traralgon Creek.
“EPA can report from its initial inspection that the oil appears to have been contained onsite and the majority of the spill has already been cleaned up; no environmental impacts have yet been identified,” Ms Sanders said.
“During an inspection EPA officers did find some residual oil sheen, so further clean-up will be required before the settling pond can discharge treated stormwater into Traralgon Creek, which is able to be done under its EPA licence.”
Ms Sanders said EPA would continue its investigation until a full clean-up had occurred and would then consider whether remedial notices or potential sanctions were appropriate.
The company has also issued a press release about the incident, which can be found here.
