Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) will require Iluka Resources to provide additional information on its works approval application to continue the disposal of waste by-products at its Douglas Mine site.
The amended request, made on 11 February under Section 22(1) of the Environment Protection Act 1970 (the Act), clarifies the remaining information Iluka needs to provide to inform EPA’s decision on the application.
EPA made the request after a review of further information supplied by Iluka in response to the original notice issued on 11 September 2015 and technical discussions between Iluka and EPA clarifying the remaining aspects needed to enable EPA to complete its assessment.
The further information required is expected to be received before the end of February, after which it will be made available for a 21 day consultation period. This will allow members of the local community, stakeholder groups and key agencies to review the information and provide comments to EPA.
Iluka had also granted EPA more time (through a Section 67A Time Waiver) to assess the application so that it can give appropriate consideration to any submissions received from the public during the consultation period.
Horsham Rural City Council (HRCC) is responsible for the planning permit application. Iluka Resources has an existing radiation management licence from DHHS that covers the disposal of naturally occurring radioactive material.
