Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) has been notified of a fish death incident at Lake Burrumbeet, 20 kilometres west of Ballarat.
There are estimated to be several thousand dead carp in the lake and around the foreshore; no other species of fish are known to be affected.
Officers from the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) have attended the site and it is likely the fish death incident has been caused by the continued natural drying event within the lake. In December last year, EPA issued a statement after a number of dead carp were found at Lake Burrumbeet.
The prolonged period of below average rainfall across Victoria has resulted in significantly reduced water levels within Lake Burrumbeet and many other lakes in western Victoria. Drying is a natural process and in some cases lake beds can dry completely and remain so for long periods.
