EPA issues notices to Bayswater businesses

8 Jan 2016

Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) has issued Pollution Abatement Notices (PANs) to three Bayswater businesses following an inspection blitz aimed at improving pollution levels in Dandenong Creek.

EPA inspected 36 industrial businesses in December after recent sampling found high levels of metal contaminants in the creek.

EPA Southern Metro Manager, Leigh Bryant, said notices were issued to three businesses after inspections found they had the potential to impact local stormwater systems.

“Recent testing of Dandenong Creek and the Old Jones Creek tributary found elevated levels of metal contaminants including chromium, cadmium, silver, nickel and lead. The aim of these notices is to implement processes and procedures that protect our environment,” he said.

“Any business that uses heavy metal solutions or hydrocarbons in their production processes must have appropriate controls in place in regards to wastewater and stormwater management and chemical storage facilities.”

Mr Bryant said failure to comply with PANs issued by EPA could result in a fine of more than $7,000. EPA will be following up the three businesses to ensure concerns are being dealt with appropriately.
