Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) is today continuing its investigation into the source of an odour plume that spread across a number of western and northern suburbs last night.
EPA’s pollution hotline has received 200 calls since 8pm last night from members of the public complaining of a sewage odour.
EPA Regional Services Executive Director, Damian Wells said the calls first started coming in from the Werribee area but then spread out as far as Gowanbrae, Avondale Heights, Craigieburn, Maidstone and Footscray.
“EPA officers were out last night investigating potential sources of the smell,” he said.
“EPA will continue its investigation today in a bid to identify an exact source, and will also be speaking with water authorities in the area.”
“Identifying the exact source can be difficult to locate as the odour plume moved from the west to the north last night due to weather conditions.”
“EPA will also conduct odour modelling and will analyse the pollution reports to gain a better understanding of the incident.”
Mr Wells encouraged the community to continue to report odour concerns immediately to its Pollution Hotline on 1300 372 842 (EPA VIC).
