Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) has been advised of a series of waste water overflows in Victoria’s North East.
North East Water advised EPA that two sewage spills – one within a rural property near Wodonga and the other near Church St, Beechworth – occurred on Friday afternoon and another today at Beechworth.
EPA attended the Beechworth site over the weekend and provided advice to North East Water on containing and cleaning up the spills to ensure community health risks are minimised.
EPA has requested North East water alert impacted communities and advises residents to avoid contact with the water while work is underway to contain the spill.
About 50,000 litres of untreated waste water overflowed at the Wodonga site while an estimated 200,000 litres overflowed from the sewerage network in Beechworth.
EPA will be investigating for possible offences against the Environment Protection Act 1970.
