Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) is continuing its investigation into a significant spill of treated wastewater in Gippsland to see if any breaches of the Environment Protection Act 1970 have occurred.
EPA was notified of the spill that occurred south of Rosedale by Gippsland Water last Friday, 11 March. The spill was estimated to be between 5-10 megalitres, however the exact size will be determined as part of EPA’s investigation.
Gippsland Water has advised EPA that the treated waste water did not enter any freshwater creeks or rivers, but did cross farm dams and paddocks and caused traffic issues in the area.
EPA officers have been on site regularly since the spill and have overseen cleanup efforts, which are still ongoing.
EPA has been notified by Gippsland Water that the spill was due to a damaged pipeline, which has now been replaced.
