EPA attends expo to educate waste transporters

2 May 2016

Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) will attend the Waste Management in Action Expo in Melbourne this week to increase awareness of the legal requirements for managing and transporting hazardous waste.

EPA’s Regulatory Practice and Strategy Executive Director, Chris Webb said the expo is    a great opportunity for EPA to meet with waste industry representatives.

“Part of EPA’s responsibility as Victoria’s environmental regulator is ensuring hazardous waste (known as prescribed industrial waste or PIW) is safely transported to an appropriate facility,” said Mr Webb.

“This work is a key priority for EPA’s Illegal Dumping Strikeforce Program which is focussed on reducing the incidence of large scale dumping of industrial waste across Victoria.”

“Complying with waste management and transport laws is pretty simple and EPA’s keen to ensure those producing, transporting and receiving waste understand their obligations and operate within the law. Failure to comply can lead to significant fines and/or loss of transport permits,” Mr Webb said.
