Red substance flowing into Murray River, Echuca

6 May 2016

Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) and the Shire of Campaspe are continuing both their investigative and remedial works after a red substance was spotted in a local creek flowing into the Murray River to the east of the Echuca-Moama Bridge.

EPA officers have taken water samples of the red substance. They have confirmed the substance is coming from a stormwater drain at Mitchell Street, Echuca, and that it has flowed through a waterway surrounded by native forest before entering the Murray River.

EPA recommends both people and pets avoid contact with the substance until clean up is completed.

If any community member has information regarding the spill and its origin please contact EPA on 1300 EPA VIC or via our website.

A further update will be provided within 24 hours.
