Creek cleanup continues after Calder Freeway spill

25 May 2016

Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) is continuing to support the cleanup of Steele Creek, Niddrie, following yesterday’s fuel tanker spill on the Calder Freeway.

EPA is advising Melbourne Water and Moonee Valley City Council on the removal of contaminated water after firefighting foam and petrol made its way into the creek.

An estimated 120,000 litres of contaminated water has been removed from the site so far and EPA has collected water samples for testing.

Melbourne Water is assisting EPA to contain the spill to an isolated area of the creek so that the remaining contaminated water can be removed.

Investigations to identify any contaminated soil are continuing.

An information session will be held on Thursday 26 May from 7 pm at the Niddrie Community Hub to inform interested community members about the cleanup.

The session will provide people with an opportunity to hear from the Metropolitan Fire Brigade (MFB), who initially led the incident response, as well as EPA and Melbourne Water.

Moonee Valley City Council has installed signs advising people to heed EPA’s advice to avoid contact with the creek.

EPA will continue to monitor water and soil quality over the coming weeks and will keep the local community informed of any impacts to its environment.
