EPA fines Scoresby company for illegal transport of waste

23 Sep 2016

Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) has fined a Scoresby company more than $1,500 for providing incorrect information on waste transport certification documents while collecting prescribed industrial waste (PIW) from multiple sites.

EPA Southern Metropolitan Regional Manager Leigh Bryant said an EPA investigation found Budget Liquid Waste Service Pty Ltd had collected grease trap waste from a number of waste producers and then identified itself as the waste producer on documentation.

“As the company is not an accredited waste agent it is only allowed to issue one certificate per waste producer. In this case, it has stopped at multiple sites to pick up waste before taking it to a facility licensed to receive it,” Mr Bryant said.

“Under EPA regulations, only accredited waste agents are permitted to be identified as the waste producers on transport certification documents. While the company has applied to become accredited, it is not yet accredited.”

Mr Bryant said that the rules on transporting PIW in Victoria were clear.

“You must comply with the waste regulations and the requirements of the Environment Protection Act 1970. Whether you’re a waste producer, transporter, or receiver, you have a responsibility to manage your waste safely and responsibly and to know where it will end up,” Mr Bryant said.

EPA guidelines regarding the transporting of PIW are available on EPA’s website.

EPA encourages anyone who has information about suspicious or illegal transport of wastes interstate to report it by calling 1300 EPA VIC.
