Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) will co-host an information session with Mornington Peninsula Shire Council regarding a proposal it has received from Grosvenor Lodge Pty Ltd to expand its Rockleigh (former Devilbend) landfill operation.
The session will be held on Wednesday 3 May at Mornington Peninsula Shire Chambers, 2 Queen St, Mornington from 5pm- 8pm and is an opportunity for community members to understand the proposal and how they can become involved in the process.
Representatives from Grosvenor Lodge will also be present at the session to provide information and to answer any questions related to the proposal.
EPA Manager of Development Assessments Tim Faragher said the current landfill was located at 435 Balnarring Road, about eight kilometres south-east of Mornington and operates under an EPA licence to accept solid inert waste.
“The company’s proposal is to extend its existing landfill into an area to the north of its current operation. The new area would join the existing site used by the landfill so would remain one landfill site and not become two,” Mr Faragher said.
Mr Faragher said that before any construction of a new landfill area could begin the company required a works approval from EPA, which is a document permitting, subject to certain conditions, the construction of a plant and the installation of equipment or the modification of an existing process.
“A works approval is required for industrial and waste management activities that have the potential to have significant environmental impacts,” Mr Faragher said.
The company also requires a planning approval from the Mornington Peninsula Shire Council.
Members of the public can make a submission or object to the application by Wednesday 10 May 2017. All comments must be made by email to works.approvals@epa.vic.gov.au or in writing by mail to: EPA Victoria, GPO Box 4395, Melbourne, Victoria 3001.
Mr Faragher said all public submissions would be considered by EPA before it makes a final decision on the application.
