Second Werribee landfill proposal community meeting to be held

19 Jul 2017

Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) is inviting members of the public to attend an information session regarding Wyndham City Council’s proposal to extend operations within the boundaries of its current landfill on Wests Road, Werribee.

The event will take place between 2pm-8pm on 1 August 2017 in meeting rooms at the Eagle Stadium, 35 Ballan Road, Werribee.

The information session provides an opportunity for community to ask questions about extra information received by EPA from Wyndham City Council to support its proposal.

Wyndham City Council will provide a brief presentation outlining its response at 4pm and again at 7pm.

Members of the public will be able to make submissions in relation to the new information up until 5pm on 16 August 2017.

EPA requested the new information from Wyndham City Council following questions raised at a community session held earlier this year. The additional information will enable EPA to continue its thorough assessment of council’s works approval application.

Wyndham City Council's application seeks to:

  • Construct four new large landfill cell areas (that will each be made up of multiple cells) within the current site to the maximum height allowed under the current planning scheme of 44 metres Australian Height Datum (AHD), or about 22 metres above ground level.
  • Continue to receive the same types of waste it currently does.

The landfill site currently receives domestic and commercial waste, demolition material, shredded tyres, uncontaminated fill and food and garden waste. Prescribed industrial waste (including asbestos) is not proposed to be accepted on site.

EPA anticipates making a decision on Wyndham City Council’s proposal by mid-September unless additional information is required to finalise its assessment of the works approval application.

Works approvals are issued by EPA Victoria under the Environment Protection Act 1970. They are required for industrial and waste management activities that have the potential for significant environmental impact.
