Environment Protection Authority (EPA) has issued a works approval to No Bull Milk Processing Pty Ltd (No Bull Milk) for a proposed milk processing plant in Cohuna.
Subject to the Gannawarra Shire Council’s decision on the planning permit, the works approval allows No Bull Milk to construct a plant capable of receiving and processing 1200kL a day of raw milk, with a dedicated wastewater treatment plant and effluent reuse scheme.
Under the proposal that EPA has approved, No Bull Milk would process the raw milk into milk powder and butter products. Raw milk would be trucked to the site and the effluent – water containing milk residue – would be generated through cleaning of the plant machinery.
The proposed wastewater treatment plant would have the capacity to treat 150 million litres of effluent a year and would be located on a neighbouring property approximately 500m south of the main processing plant.
EPA comprehensively considered the potential for noise and odour impacts and assessed the environmental controls of the proposal before determining it posed a low environmental risk. Once works are completed, a licence will be required for ongoing operation of the facility.
No public submissions were received during the works approval’s public consultation process.
Works approvals are issued by EPA Victoria under the Environment Protection Act 1970. They are required for industrial and waste management activities that have the potential for significant environmental impact.
