Community session for Yumbah Portland proposal

7 Dec 2018

Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) is considering a Works Approval application from Yumbah Aquaculture Ltd for the construction of a new onshore abalone farm at Bolwarra, near Portland.

EPA has received 337 submissions from the public and has arranged for an independently chaired community conference under section 20B of Environment Protection Act 1970 (EP Act) to be held at Portland Civic Hall, 30 Bentinck Street, Portland on Wednesday, 19 December 2018.

The purpose of the facilitated conference is:

  • for EPA and Glenelg Shire Council to gain a better understanding of community concerns and issues that need to be considered;
  • to inform the public on the Works Approval and planning permission applications, the assessment process and their current statuses; and
  • to identify potential resolutions for any issues in the application

Following the conference the independent chair will prepare a conference report summarising the discussions and concerns raised, and make recommendations for consideration by EPA, the Council and the applicant. The conference report will be published on the Engage Victoria website: https://engage.vic.gov.au/epa-works-approvals/yumbah-aquaculture-works-approval-application

Officers from Glenelg Shire Council will also attend the meeting as the conference will include consideration of key planning issues as the proposal also requires a planning permit in addition to the EPA works approval.
