ORIGINAL ALERT, FRIDAY 16 MARCH 2018
Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) is warning of poor water quality on the Yarra River at Kew and to advise the public to avoid contact with water at that location until further notified.
EPA is investigating elevated levels of E coli. Increased E coli levels are usually caused by the increased presence of faecal matter.
“In periods of low rainfall a sewer related event is a high possibility but it could also be caused by animal waste,” said Chief Environmental Scientist Dr Andrea Hinwood.
“Potential health effects include ear, eye and nose infections. Children, elderly and people with vulnerable immune systems are at the highest risk of getting ill from water-borne pathogens. People should see their doctor if they have a suspected swim-related illness.
“This is probably a short term issue, but with warm weather forecast for tomorrow, EPA wants people to know to check our website for information before any recreational activity involving the Yarra at Kew.
