A year of achievement for EPA’s Chief Environmental Scientist

1 May 2018

At Environment Protection Authority Victoria ( EPA), we’re dedicated to putting science at the forefront of our work – and we’re fortunate to have the very best people to help lead the charge.

Tuesday 1 May marks 12 months since Dr Andrea Hinwood came through our doors.

As Victoria’s inaugural Chief Environmental Scientist, Andrea and her team have made significant progress in strengthening EPA’s scientific credibility and expertise.

Some of Andrea’s early successes include:

  • releasing Victoria’s first Applied Science Strategy 2018-2023
  • leading EPA’s Environment Public Health Unit to provide Victorians with environmental public health advice to help keep them safe from harm
  • helping EPA respond to a number of environmental and public health incidents, including the Coolaroo fire, Cobden peat fires and PFAS contamination
  • contributing over 90 items of advice and technical information
  • hosting three free public seminars to enhance community access to science
  • attending more than 32 community and industry forums
  • presenting at seven conferences and academic forums
  • working with organisations such as Monash Sustainable Development Institute, BehaviourWorks Australia, Deakin University, Federation University, Melbourne University and Monash University on ways to deliver new knowledge, technology and data on environmental and human health, interventions and treatment
  • working closely with the cross-jurisdictional chief scientists and seeking to establish a partnership with the Heads of EPA Australia and New Zealand.

It’s thanks to people like Andrea and her team that EPA is becoming a world class environmental regulator – and Victoria, an even better place to live.

Nial Finegan
Chief Executive Officer
