EPA welcomes new Governing Board

23 May 2018

Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) welcomes the Victorian Government’s appointment of a Governing Board following an intensive selection process.

Minister for Energy, Environment & Climate Change, Lily D’Ambrosio, announced the appointment of eight highly esteemed individuals earlier today.

The Governing Board, chaired by Cheryl Batagol PSM, will lead EPA so it protects the environment and people by preventing and reducing harm from pollution and waste.

The Government has invested $182.4 million in reforms to transform EPA into a modern regulator, equipping and resourcing it to address current and future challenges.

EPA Chief Executive Officer, Nial Finegan said a strong board will provide the strategic direction and governance that EPA needs to become a world class environmental regulator.

“Already, significant work is underway to transform EPA and today’s announcement heralds a shift in our maturity as we prepare to become a fully independent statutory authority from 1 July 2018,” Mr Finegan said.

“We look forward to working with the incoming Governing Board as we continue to implement the Government’s vision for environment protection in Victoria,” he said.

The Environment Protection Act 2017 comes into effect on 1 July 2018, establishing EPA as an independent statutory authority and legislating the role of a Governing Board, CEO and Chief Environmental Scientist. The Governing Board also commences at this time.
