Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) has charged Incitec Pivot Limited (IPL) following an investigation into two chemical discharges at Corio Bay.
The four charges allege that acidic wastewater from IPL’s North Shore premises discharged through a decommissioned seawater cooling system on 24 May and 19 June 2017. The discharges allegedly contravened the conditions of IPL's licence and caused pollution of waters, contrary to sections 27 and 39 of the Environment Protection Act 1970.
The maximum penalty for each of these offences is $386,856.
As the matter is now before the courts, it would be inappropriate for EPA to make any further comment.
