Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) and Glenelg Shire Council are now considering a proposal for a new abalone farm at Dutton’s Way, Bolwarra, near Portland.
EPA has received a detailed Works Approval application from the company and initiated a formal 21 day consultation period. The public can make submissions on the proposal until 21 November. EPA and the Council will hold a public information session on Monday, 12 November 2018.
The proposal is for a new abalone farm, Yumbah Nyamat, on low lying land selected for access to clean sea water with optimum/reduced pumping needs. The proposed farm would include a hatchery, nursery and growout tanks, pumping seawater to the land-based farm, before discharging treated water to the bay through a series of outlet pipelines.
Yumbah Aquaculture Ltd has lodged the Works Approval application (Ref. No. SO1003316) with EPA and a Planning Permit application (Ref. No. P18147) with the Council as part of the approval process for the project.
The information session will offer members of the public the chance to obtain a better understanding of the proposal, the Works Approval and Planning Permit Approval processes and how they can have their say.

Additional information on EPA Works Approvals
Works Approvals are required under the Environment Protection Act 1970 for industrial and waste management activities that have the potential for significant environmental impact. The approval permits the construction of a plant, the installation of equipment or modification of processes.
A Works Approval may also be required when the occupier of scheduled premises seeks to increase or alter the emissions or type of wastes that their premises handle.
The EPA Works Approval and Glenelg Shire Council Planning Permit are not the only steps in the process. The project will also require a Building Permit, and Marine and Coastal Act, Cultural Heritage and Works on Waterways consents.
