EPA engages with community in relation to West Footscray fire

10 Sep 2018

Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) officers have been actively engaging with local communities to ensure they have the latest information available about a fire that occurred at a West Footscray site recently.

Over the weekend of 8 and 9 September, EPA officers spoke with 238 residents in Cruickshank Park, Hyde Street Park, the Warmies, Altona Gate Shopping Centre, Yarraville Coles, Altona Beach and the Yarraville Community Garden.

EPA officers were able to provide updates on the current conditions of the local environment, as well as advice about potential impacts on human health and the environment from the fire.

EPA also spoke with the Community Garden Group, members of The Friends of Stony Creek and Altona Surf Lifesaving Club.

EPA officers will continue to engage with the community this week and are visiting local schools, neighbourhood houses, local businesses and will be at Stony Creek and Cruickshank Park.

EPA is working closely with Melbourne Water, Maribyrnong Council, Hobsons Bay Council and other agencies to develop a clean-up and recovery plan for Stony Creek and surrounding areas.

The clean-up of Stony Creek is expected to take some time and EPA will continue to inform community of progress.
