Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) is assessing a works approval application from North East Water to upgrade their Tallangatta Waste Water Treatment Plant, east of Wodonga.
The proposed works include decommissioning the current mechanical treatment system at Thomas Mitchell Drive and replacing it with a lagoon system within the premise’s existing boundaries to prepare for the town’s future growth.
North East Water has forecast that they will need to treat an extra 70ML of wastewater every year by 2040.
North East Water proposes to continue to treat wastewater to Class C standard for reuse on land, not for discharge to local waterways.
EPA will assess the current application for potential environmental impacts such as noise, odour, surface water and ground water contamination risks.
North East Water will host a public drop-in information session on the proposal:
Tuesday, 24 September
4 - 7pm
Tallangatta Library Community Space
Towong St, Tallangatta
To view the application and make a submission visit https://engage.vic.gov.au/epa-works-approvals/northeastwater
Submissions on the application are open until 5pm, 9 October.
Works approvals are issued by EPA under the Environment Protection Act 1970. They are required for industrial and waste management activities that have the potential for significant environmental impact.
A works approval permits plant and equipment to be installed, the operation of which will result in one or more of:
- the discharge of waste to the environment
- an increase in, or alteration to, an existing discharge
- a change in the way waste is treated or stored.
