EPA Victoria and the Wimmera Catchment Management Authority (WCMA) worked together on a project (an ecological risk assessment) to improve the health of the lower Wimmera River. This river is under pressure from low flows and poor water quality.
Salinity has the greatest influence on the health of the animals and plants living in the river and environmental flows are the best way to reduce salinity levels. The model developed in this project allows the WCMA to determine the optimal use of their environmental flow allocations for reducing salinity levels and improving river health, under drought and non-drought conditions. In a drying climate, being smarter with less water is critical to managing the water needs of the environment.
