Use of biosolids as geotechnical fill

Biosolids (appropriately treated sewage sludge) can make an important contribution to sustainable environmental management, through substitution for raw materials as geotechnical fill. The Guidelines for Environmental Management: Use of Biosolids as Geotechnical Fill enables this beneficial use of biosolids, by providing a management framework that ensures any chemical and microbiological risks are appropriately managed. They are intended to provide an alternative option for biosolids reuse, in circumstances where land application is not appropriate. The return of organic material, trace elements, moisture and nutrients to our soils through land application of biosolids is the preferred reuse option where appropriate.
