Solid storage and handling guidance

Materials stored and handled incorrectly can be released into the environment. This can contaminate land, pollute waterways and groundwater. It may also create dust emissions which can harm people, plants, animals and ecosystems.

Prevention of solid material spills can save valuable material, produces less waste and saves money.

Solid storage and handling guidelines

EPA’s Solid storage and handling guideline (publication 1730) has been published to help businesses with practical controls to prevent spills, or be incorrectly released into the environment.

The guidance includes information on:

  • source, pathways and receptors
  • controls
  • good practice
  • appropriate storage.
